We are thrilled to announce that a brand new tour has been added to Manchester Walking Tours; the audio tour guide that allows you to go at your own pace as it leads you through the city’s hot spots and highlights. The new Cultural Tour celebrates Manchester’s rich and diverse culture from past to present, exploring everything from the city’s grand cathedral to its most coveted indie music venues (cue Oasis reference).
Now, this is the really exciting bit. Voicing the tour is DJ and all round legend Mary-Anne Hobbs. Mary-Anne is one of Lancashire’s proudest exports and we were over the moon that she wanted to use her smooth-talking talents to bring the Cultural Tour to life.
Mary-Anne kicks off the tour in the Northern Quarter, outside the Fig and Sparrow, from which point she leads you on a journey of discovery through highlights including the National Football Museum, Albert Square and the Hacienda; you even take a little trip along the canals.
The final point on the walking tour is the Whitworth Art Gallery, which following a multi-million pound refurbishment is having its grand reopening this Saturday (also known as Valentine’s, for the romantics among us!). The gallery’s new look is set to be awe inspiring and we personally cannot wait to see the Whitworth’s fantastic new design. If you are planning on visiting the gallery, why not use the walking tour as an introduction for your visit?
A truly collaborative project, the app has been developed as part of Manchester’s digital strategy in a partnership between Marketing Manchester, NOMA, magneticNorth and Manchester City Council. The content for the new Cultural Tour was written by Creative Tourist, Manchester’s online art and travel guide, with tour guide John Ryan. The walking tour was also part funded by Arts Council England.
Manchester has an amazing cultural, social and historical heritage and we are super proud to help bring this to everyone’s attention. The idea behind Manchester Walking Tours is to provide visitors and locals with a way to interact digitally with the city and discover its untold stories. We hope that in time we will be able to bring you more and more of the city’s defining moments and hidden gems so that everyone can really open their eyes to the amazing stories that make up Manchester.
The app has been built using Under The Paving Stones, our very own digital platform that provides unique audio and visual experience that brings physical spaces to life. We are continuing to explore different ways in which Under The Paving Stones can be used to create new and interesting experiences in Manchester and beyond. If you have a story to tell, why not get in touch.
The new walking tour is now available on the app which can be downloaded for free from iTunes.
