Over the last few months, we’ve been working with Marks & Spencer on a new project for their exhibition in Leeds. To help them share the collection’s highlights with visitors, we created ‘Archive Explorer’, an interactive digital display that celebrates the stories behind each item in the archive. We are delighted to announce, it’s now live! Now where’s that bottle of M&S champagne..?
Archive Explorer is available on iPads installed in the ‘Marks in Time’ exhibition space. Using an interactive interface, the application allows visitors to discover archive content by theme and select individual items to explore in more detail. Visitors can then save items or themes to create their own personal collection, which they can email to themselves to keep, or share with friends on social media.
A large part of the project was the creation of a system that would allow the M&S archive team to easily upload and edit content. To do this, we created a bespoke CMS that would enable the M&S team to customise all the images, watermarking and editorial content in the application.
The Marks in Time exhibition is open every weekday at the Michael Marks Building, University of Leeds. There are plenty of events going on throughout the year with new items being added to the collection every day. We hope that Archive Explorer will offer a new way for people to share the stories from M&S’s impressive 130 year history. Pop in and have a play!
